Handy retiling tips from your local tile store

If you have decided to retile your floor, it may seem like a daunting option at first; however, with our handy hints and tips, retiling your home isn’t as difficult as it may seem. Tiling is a great choice for any busy and functional home thanks to its easy maintenance and hard-wearing material.

Bathrooms, kitchens and hallways, in particular, are a great choice for tiles, but with underfloor heating, you could pretty much tile any floor in your home and still be left with that warm and cosy feeling underfoot.

Tiles are waterproof, meaning they are great for busy areas that are likely to see a lot of water – either from your tap or the weather!

To get an attractive and professional finish, we recommend planning your tile rows in advance to avoid a messy and uneven look. Retiling your home should always begin from the centre line of your wall or floor so that any cut-to-size pieces will end up at the side of each room and will be the same size.

Following this step will mean you end up with a symmetrical look – definitely important for your floors and walls. To help with marking out your tile rows, we recommend using a tile gauge to support your layout.

For your bathroom, using a tile with an anti-slip finish will provide a safe and high-quality finish. At The Aylesbury Tile Centre, we have a wide range of tiles that are perfect for your bathroom floor and will give you protection from slipping when getting out of the tub or shower.

Check your tiles before you begin to lay them – there is nothing worse than getting halfway through laying your tiles and finding that the quality has changed or you have several cracks that are irreparable. At The Aylesbury Tile Centre, we only supply the highest quality tiles and will ensure that your tiles are in perfect condition prior to you collecting them.

Prepare your floor or wall before you begin retiling. It’s important to understand whether your floor is suitable for tiles. If you are not sure, we recommend asking the experts in your local tile store; however, if the floor has previously been tiled, its likely to be fine with some TLC – make sure there are no remnants of the previous tile before you begin your retiling process.

Whilst you are checking your floor, make sure it’s level – if not, you may have to use a levelling compound before you begin. Similarly, if your wall is uneven, you may need to plaster before tiling.

Lastly, to avoid irritating your skin, get yourself a trusty pair of rubber gloves to protect you from the grout and adhesive you will be using throughout the process of retiling your home.

Tile design choices for your kitchen and hallway

The chances are the kitchen is the space in your home where everything happens. You make food, catch up with family after a long day, and if your room is big enough, you may even entertain friends and family.

With all that traffic coming in and out of the kitchen all day long, it’s no surprise that the kitchen is the room that needs the most maintenance, care and attention to keep it looking sharp and functional.

When you decide it’s time to upgrade your kitchen, there are several things you will need to consider before you begin.

Once you have considered your budget for your kitchen upgrade, you will want to think about the colour scheme and style of your room upgrade.

The amount of space you have and the natural light available will impact the kitchen tile choices you make. The floor is the busiest space in your kitchen, with traffic coming in and out of the room throughout the day, so you will want to choose the flooring that can best accommodate the footfall without suffering from damage and wear and tear.

Deciding which tiles will best suit your entryway can be a little tricky. The first step is to consider the design of your entryway. Are you going for something modern, or are you looking for something a little more traditional?

Are there any other elements that you want to include in your entryways, such as a fireplace or a wall of windows? Once you’ve decided on your design, it’s time to think about the feel of your entryway.

Are you going for a soft and cushy feel or a sleek and modern look? Do you want it to feel natural and earthy, or do you want it to feel sleek and modern?

Once you’ve decided on your design and your feel, it’s time to pick out your natural stone tiles. But before you do that, you need to think about what you’ll be using the tiles for.

Natural stone tiles are generally used to cover your floors, so you’ll need to make sure that you choose hardwearing natural stone tiles that will support heavy traffic areas and will stand the test of time.

Now that you know what you need to consider, it’s time to start shopping!

Tile designs for your indoor-outdoor living space

We spent so much time in our gardens during the pandemic, and it’s no wonder! With nowhere else to go, we retreated to our piece of luxury.

Outdoor dining grew in popularity; installing hot tubs for a bit of relaxation and getting creative with our flowerbeds were all great pastimes of the pandemic. So now you have fallen in love with your garden again, it might be time to think of upgrading and modernising your walkways and patio areas.

Creating this look doesn’t have to be as difficult as it may seem. Whether you have a cosy house with a few rooms or a luxurious house with a lot of space, creating a seamless transition through your rooms to the outside of your home can transform your home.

To get that flowing feel, you simply need to think about your garden space and choose complementary outdoor flooring, such as natural stone.

The right back garden tile choice can turn your outdoor living space into a stunning place where you can entertain, relax in the sunshine or hone those BBQ cooking skills you learned in lockdown.

No matter the look you are trying to achieve, at Aylesbury Tile Centre, we have the tiles and the knowledge to support you through your indoor-outdoor living project.

Whether you are looking for an outdoor tile to mix with a great mosaic tile design or you need some help with finding the perfect tile to bring your outdoor living spaces to life, we can support you.
