5 Top Tile Trends for Bathrooms and Kitchens 2021
Looking for tile ideas to update your bathroom, kitchen or other space? This year tiles are having a real décor moment. From Victorian pattern tiles for a statement hallway, to vibrant metro tiles for a high-impact bathroom, there are so many styles to choose from.
Our tile experts at Aylesbury Tile Centre take you through the hottest tile styles and how you can get the look for less.
Pattern Tiles
Pattern floor and wall tiles are perfect for putting your stamp on any room. Taking centre stage right now are Victorian pattern tiles, inspired by traditional and heritage tile designs.
Comprising delicate geometric patterns in black, grey, green and blue on crisp white or coloured backgrounds, they bring a touch of elegance to any room.
What is brilliant about this style is that you don’t have to have a period home to enjoy them.
Victorian, Georgian or Art Deco inspired pattern tiles suit any interior, and they look just as striking in modern homes.
You can use pattern tiles to create an impressive bathroom or kitchen floor, or for adding interest to splashbacks. They also look amazing in smaller spaces, such as cloakrooms and entrance halls.

Moroccan Tiles
Also stealing the limelight this year are Moroccan tiles, known for their intricate patchwork patterns and vivid colours.
These are ideal for introducing an exotic Middle Eastern vibe to your décor (you can tell we’ve been missing holidays!) and tie in beautifully with other bohemian items, such as rugs, cushions and baskets made out of natural materials.
The intense patterns are great for creating show-stopping walls and floors, as well highlighting individual elements, such as kitchen splashbacks and shower surrounds.
Moroccan tiles can also be used to liven up an outdoor patio or cosy seating area. If you’re looking to create a Moroccan inspired outdoor space, porcelain tiles are durable, long-lasting and slip resistant.

Terracotta Effect Tiles
The trend for natural textures has seen a big surge in Terracotta tiles. Available in tones from pale peach to earthy browns and reds, terracotta tiles introduce warmth and colour to any space.
Terracotta tiles suit modern and traditional homes and are ideal for covering large areas, including kitchen and conservatory floors, and outdoor patios and paths.
Lay square terracotta tiles in a traditional format for a rustic ‘quarry tile’ aesthetic, or for a modern twist choose different shapes, such as Hexagon terracotta tiles, or lay them in a herringbone or chevron pattern.
One aspect to consider when choosing terracotta tiles is whether to opt for glazed or unglazed. Glazed terracotta tiles don’t necessarily have a polished appearance – they can still appear matt – but are more water resistant making them better suited to wetter environments such as bathrooms, shower rooms and patios.
Unglazed terracotta tiles retain their natural clay colour but are slightly more porous. If you’re intending to use them in a bathroom or kitchen, it’s important to add a sealer to prevent them absorbing moisture.

Metro Tiles
Metro tiles, also known as Subway tiles, are a timeless brick shaped tile which look great in classic and contemporary settings.
This year Metro tiles are very much in but with a couple of modern twists. The first is the pattern – usually laid in a brickwork format – metro tiles are appearing in fresh formats, including 45-degree herringbone and basket weave patterns.
The second shake-up is colour. In a departure from traditional black and white, metro tiles are emerging in all colours, from pastel pink, grey and blue to opulent burgundy and emerald green tones.

Marble Effect Tiles
Although hot right now, marble and marble effect tiles make for timeless floor and wall coverings that won’t date. Its distinctive veining and luxurious finish make it a sought-after option for bathrooms, kitchens and hallways.
If real marble isn’t an option, marble effect porcelain and ceramic tiles can achieve the look for less.
Marble comes in a range of tones, from almost black with minimal light veining to almost white with soft streaks of grey. It also come in shades of brown, grey and silver.
For a modern look, why not try unusual shapes, such as hexagon marble tiles or brick shaped marble tiles? These bring a real touch of luxury to kitchen and bathroom countertops.
If you’re considering marble for a heavy-traffic space, ceramic marble tiles are a good choice as they are extremely hardwearing and, when sealed properly, repel stains and spillages, and are slip-resistant.
